Howie Klausner and his staff began filming the Outlaws during games, practices and behind the scenes early in the 2006 season, O'Neal's first as Billings' coach.
The Outlaws went on to have a dream season, putting together a 16-1 record and winning the National Indoor Football League championship with a 59-44 win over Fayetteville, N.C., in front of a crowd of 7,934 at MetraPark Arena.
"It's unbelievable the way it came together with the championship," said Klausner. "I came to Billings with the idea of making a documentary on a bunch of lunch-pail, working-man heroes who bust their butts for 200 bucks a game.
"The way it came together with the league championship and ...

Though the scoreboard read 33-8 in their favor, there was no party atmosphere in the Billings Outlaws' locker room at halftime.
In fact, the party was just getting started.
Billings dominated the Bloomington Extreme from start to finish Saturday night, handing the highly touted visitors a 60-26 beating in front of 4,422 fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
"We played four quarters of good football ... for the first time all season," said Outlaws defensive end Eugene Phillips. "Our theme this whole week was to finish.
"We've had teams on their heels before, just like we did tonight. But tonight, no one came in the locker...

Billings, MT. Travonti Johnson, corner back for the Billings Outlaws, returned home to Billings after a two day tryout with the San Jose SaberCats. The spokesperson for the SaberCats said that they were very impressed with the athleticism and abilities of Travonti “Tuffy” Johnson. The SaberCats opted not to sign Johnson at this time due to their depth at his position. “We prefer that Travonti return to the UIF, specifically the Billings Outlaws, to finish out his rookie season. We are very impressed with him and want to see him continue learning the indoor game under Coach Heron O’Neal’s leadership. We intend to keep ...

Artavious Williams is known as a great pass blocker.
But truth be told, the 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman would be perfectly happy if the Billings Outlaws never passed the ball.
"He loves to punish people," says Outlaws quarterback Chris Dixon. "That's just the style of football that he loves. Artavious is the best pass blocker I've ever played with, but he loves to get out and run and punish people as a run blocker."
And when the normally mild-mannered Williams feels the Outlaws are getting too pass-happy, he steps out of his shell.
"Oh yeah. He lets me know," laughs coach Heron O'Neal. "Big Tay and I ...

A little stability is going a long way for the Billings Outlaws.
The local indoor football team is in the midst of its best season - by far - in terms of attendance. The Outlaws have drawn 13,692 fans in three home games this season, an average of 4,564 per game.
That's an increase of more than 2,000 per game over last season and an increase of more than 1,500 per game over 2006, when Billings went 16-1 and won the National Indoor Football League championship.
Undoubtedly, the biggest reason for the spike in attendance is stability.
In the past year, the team's owners have spent more than $4 million in building the Outlaws SportsPlex - a state...

A long, painful night for the Wichita Wild on Saturday could be summed up in one play.
As if the 33-6 beatdown the Billings Outlaws put on them in the first half wasn't enough, the Wild's first offensive play of the third quarter told the story of Billings' 55-13 United Indoor Football win.
On first-and-10 from the Wichita 22-yard line, Wild quarterback Efi Eyo unloaded a long pass just seconds before Outlaws linebacker John Winchester leveled him with a vicious hit.
Some 40 yards downfield, Outlaws safety Travis Salter delivered an equally vicious hit on intended receiver Carlos Cavanaugh as the ball sailed over their heads and over the end zo...

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Life on the road is never boring for the Billings Outlaws.
Aaron Galvan's 32-yard field goal as time expired Thursday night lifted Billings to a 28-26 win over the Colorado Ice in a wild United Indoor Football league game that saw three lead changes in the final 90 seconds.
In their first road game this season, the Outlaws lost 31-30 at Sioux City two weeks ago as a potential game-winning field goal missed wide as time expired.

Robert Reed thinks he's open on every play.
But even when he's wrong, he can still make things right for the Billings Outlaws.
Reed's catch of a 13-yard laser from Chris Dixon with 2:30 remaining Saturday night led the Outlaws to a dramatic 38-31 win over the three-time defending United Indoor Football league champion Sioux Falls Storm in front of 5,558 frenzied fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
"When it's on the line, I want the ball," said Reed. "I want it more than anybody on the field. I told Chris to give it to me and I'd take care of the rest."

Although the Sioux City Bandits were able to squeak out a victory against the Billings Outlaws last Friday night, their effect on the Outlaws may be more detrimental. Outlaws UIF All-Star wide receiver, Robert Reed, missed last Friday’s game due to an injury he sustained in the first meeting with the Sioux City Bandits. “I don’t know if he’ll be ready for the meeting with Sioux Falls,” says Head Coach O’Neal. “He took some hard hits in that game and he still hasn’t recovered a hundred percent”. The Bandits also put the ‘hurt’ on another UIF All-Star wide receiver, Anthony Candler. “...

It takes a lot to discourage Heron O'Neal.
It certainly takes more than a frustrating, one-point loss followed by a 12-hour, middle-of-the-night bus trip. Especially when the three-time defending United Indoor Football champions are headed to town.
"I would say I'm a little disappointed, but not discouraged," said the Billings Outlaws' coach Saturday afternoon, a little less than 18 hours after Friday night's 31-30 loss in Sioux City, Iowa. "It was a tough loss ... it was definitely a game we could have won.
"But it is what it is. Sioux City played a better game than we did and they won the game ... plain and simple. N...

Travonti Johnson was feeling greedy Saturday night.
The Billings Outlaws safety tied a United Indoor Football single-game record with three interceptions, returning one of them 39 yards for a touchdown in the Outlaws' 72-38 romp over the Sioux City Bandits in front of 3,976 fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
But Johnson was more concerned with the two interceptions he didn't get.
"I should have had five," smiled the 6-foot-21/2, 200-pound rookie who has been tagged with the nickname "Tuff" by Outlaws coach Heron O'Neal. "I dropped two, and one of them I would have taken back for a score.

Mike Bazemore has options. The Billings Outlaws defensive end is toting two degrees from Michigan State, where he was a two-year starter and four-year letterwinner on the football team.
But despite having his rookie indoor season cut short by a knee injury after just six games last year, Bazemore kept those options on hold.
"I was distraught, no doubt," said the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder of his torn ACL that occurred last May 26 vs. Omaha. "But I never really considered giving up football. The bottom line is I still wanted to play.
